Dr. Michael Habib is a Research Associate in the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, an Adjunct Professor of Biology at College of the Canyons, and a freelance writer/artist/consultant. He is an expert in biomechanics exploring the relationships between evolution, structure, and performance in animals (including humans) using a combination of anatomy, art, and engineering. Dr. Habib is an experienced animation consultant, creature designer, and storyboard artist. He has applied his unique blend of science and art to creature design on over 20 projects for leading studios, including projects for BBC, CBC, National Geographic, Creative Differences, YouTube Originals, Amblin Entertainment, Apple TV+, and Netflix. He is currently working on a major project (under NDA) in collaboration with Silverback Productions and Industrial Light and Magic.

Anatomy for Artists

Room 103 | Dr. Michael Habib

Join Dr. Michael Habib, anatomy professor and animation/VFX consultant, as he collaborates with a professional model to demonstrate key aspects of human anatomy specifically for artists. The presentation will focus on joints, motion, and dynamic surface changes that any artist – from beginner to advanced – can use to make their characters more compelling and dynamic. Dr. Habib will leverage his 20 years of VFX and Animation consulting experience to provide veteran tips for how to design characters that will ultimate sculpt, rig, and animate properly. Guidelines for using human anatomy as a starting point for building creature anatomy will also be included. Participants will be encouraged to sketch and ask questions along the way.

Winged Wonders: How to Design and Illustrate Animal Wings

Properly designing, drawing, and animating wings often present unique challenges to artists and animators. Join veteran anatomy professor and VFX/animation consultant, Dr. Michael Habib, as he presents on key elements of building wings and winged creatures. He will cover anatomy, motion, and basic fundamentals that anyone of any skill level can use to create more compelling winged animals – both real and imagined. From bats to angels, and birds to dragons, Dr. Habib will walk you through the primary things that wings must have – and some things that they shouldn’t. Some common myths and misconceptions will be busted along the way. Along with animal wings, we will take a look at mechanical wings and principles applicable to vehicle design.
