South Asian Stories: If Not Now, Then When?!

Room 209-210 | South Asians in Visual Arts | Jaydeep Hasrajani | Anu Chouhan | Anoosha Syed | Rhea Dadoo | Naveen Selvanathan

With the global reach of animation, we have an opportunity to create cross-cultural fandoms! We can build an appreciation of diverse stories and cultural understanding, and yet we do not see much diversity. Heck, we don’t even see an equal representation of culturally-specific stories. So this got us thinking… If some of the most epic stories, folklore, and mythology come from South Asian culture, why do we not see that represented in the onslaught of content being delivered to audiences? Where are the fantasy action shows? Ear-worm Musicals? Epic hard-as-nails video games? Page-Turning graphic novels?

This panel explores the pathways for South Asian stories to expand across streaming, gaming, publishing, and merchandising, because if not now, then when?!
