The Animation Guild (TAG), IATSE Local 839, and the Canadian Animation Guild (CAG), IATSE Local 938, are labor unions representing animation in North America. Founded in 1952, TAG represents more than 6,000 artists, technicians, writers, and production workers across the U.S., while Vancouver-based CAG, founded in 2020, represents animators, VFX artists, digital creators, and video game workers in British Columbia as Canada's first animation union. Together, they advocate for fair wages, safe and equitable working conditions, strong benefits, and workers' rights through collective bargaining, and use the strength of organized labor to improve protections for animation industry professionals.

Japanese animation has had a deep impact on U.S. animation, but how is it reflected in today’s shows? What was once a niche fandom storyboard artists, designers, and writers drew upon for inspiration, is now a gigantic global sensation impacting the themes and storytelling of American animation studios. Can and should the big business of U.S. animation be more like the Japanese model–using the medium of animation for more than select “marketable” genres?
