Painting an anime-style background in gouache

In this demo, I’m going to show you how I paint a simple landscape in poster colour, an opaque water-based medium similar to gouache. Since poster colour has traditionally been used for background paintings in Japanese animation, it’s perfectly suited for lush and vibrant environments. I’ll show you how I approach painting clouds and vegetation, how I simplify shapes and colours, and how I create harmonies. I’ll also cover a variety of techniques: from watercolour-like wet-in-wet applications to opaque brushwork. You’ll learn about my favourite tools, go-to techniques, and pick up some tips and tricks.
